HOUSE OF GLASS
Sarah Pekkanen
We’re reading HOUSE OF GLASS this month in our Amazon Book Club called UNDER THE RADAR BOOK CLUB.
This is my summary and review of the book.
Stella is a court-appointed advocate for children of families going through a dispute over where and who the child should be placed with upon the dissolution of a marriage.
She just received a new client named Rose. Rose is younger than the clients she normally takes on, in fact, Stella has a hard and fast rule against working with younger clients because of her personal trauma when she was younger that left her temporarily mute.
But her childhood experience is exactly the reason Stella’s supervisor thinks she would be a perfect advocate for Rose. Rose also suffers from traumatic mutism and he believes Stella is just the person to bring out a fair decision in Rose’s case.
Who is the most appropriate primary guardian for Rose?
And can Stella help Rose without hurting herself?
I had a good time reading HOUSE OF GLASS. I’ve read Pekkanen before and my reading experiences have varied in enjoyment.
I always appreciate that her thrillers are psychology-heavy and often talk about the masks people display outwardly and how it doesn’t always match what’s going on underneath.
I like Stella as a character and would read further books featuring her either as a main or side character.
We’re having so much fun discussing HOUSE OF GLASS over on Amazon Book Clubs. Join us!
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy!

A story of mix-ups, mess-ups and making the most of second chances, this is the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You and The Giver of Stars.Who are you when you are forced to walk in someone else’s shoes?
Nisha Cantor lives the globetrotting life of the seriously wealthy, until her husband announces a divorce and cuts her off. Nisha is determined to hang onto her glamorous life. But in the meantime, she must scramble to cope–she doesn’t even have the shoes she was, until a moment ago, standing in.
That’s because Sam Kemp – in the bleakest point of her life – has accidentally taken Nisha’s gym bag. But Sam hardly has time to worry about a lost gym bag–she’s struggling to keep herself and her family afloat. When she tries on Nisha’s six-inch high Christian Louboutin red crocodile shoes, the resulting jolt of confidence that makes her realize something must change—and that thing is herself.
Full of Jojo Moyes’ signature humor, brilliant storytelling, and warmth, Someone Else’s Shoes is a story about how just one little thing can suddenly change everything.
SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES
Jojo Moyes
Have you ever wanted to see if life was better in SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES?
When Sam and Nisha inadvertently swap bags at the gym, they get more than just SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES in their bags. They get a much-needed reality check and a second chance to make things right.
There is a balance in the book between biting commentary and romance. That balance is not held well. There is not a lot of romance in this book for it being categorized as such. It’s about two women coming to terms with the life they have and their role in it.
It felt like a reckoning more than a meet-cute.
There is an overlay of humor throughout the book and the jokes are often at the expense of the characters. I felt uncomfortable with some remarks and references made about wealth and status by one of the characters and it was not addressed by the end of the book.
I would say this book is similar in effect to some of Moyes’s other novels in that you’re getting a bittersweet combination. Within the storyline are heavier topics than you’d expect and twisted within that is a life lesson laced with humor.
As always, and just like last time I’m left with mixed feelings about Moyes’s book. The writing is solid, the topics are heavy, the romance is light, and I’m sure SOMEONE out there is going to love it more than me.
We’re reading this book as part of my UNDER-THE-RADAR Book Club for February and I can’t wait to hear what the others have to say. This book is also a Book of the Month selection for February and hopefully, this review helps you to make a good decision.
SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES will be available as early as February 2, 2023. Check your bookstore for official dates.
