  • Book Review: The Future Saints by Ashley Winstead

The Future Saints by Ashley Winstead

    Book Summary.

THE FUTURE SAINTS Ashley Winstead.  Unpopular opinion upcoming… Winsteads books either work for me or they don’t. I either love it or hate it. There is no in between- until now. I gave THE FUTURE SAINTS three stars. It felt mid. I’m sorry to report it is not like DAISY JONES. Not close. The setup is this: Theo takes on the management of a band at the door of destruction hoping he can turn the band around. What he doesn’t know is it will take most of him, all of him, to attempt to. Hannah is the lead of the band. And she will be his undoing. One note at a time.

    The Review.

A love story is promised and it was given. However it ended up. I had no connection to any of the characters. I had no connection to the story. I did not care what happened to any of them. The writing is missing a bit of charisma. It is missing that spark. That fire. It has a lot to do with Theo. Theo is as inert as they come. He was not constructed well. I don’t feel like he should have been the narrative choice. For god sakes why not Hannah. Comparing it to a book that has fanfare and a following, a tv show adaptation, and awards is not exactly telling the truth of it. Don’t expect to come away buzzing after reading it. Don’t expect to come away with a new favorite character. Don’t expect it to cement Winstead as an auto buy author and this might be the book for you. I recommend to completionists and them alone. • Book Review: Jenny Cooper Has a Secret by Joy Fielding

Jenny Cooper Has a Secret by Joy Fielding

    Book Summary.

    Jenny Cooper Has a Secret

    Joy Fielding

Linda’s husband just died. Her best friend, saddled with a dementia diagnosis, moves into a memory care ward. Linda is swirling in a whirlwind of grief. She has no one to talk to, no one to confide in, no one to go home to.

One day, while she is visiting her friend in the memory care unit, she comes across a patient. Her name is Jenny. Jenny Cooper. Instantly fascinated by her, Jenny says she has a secret. She has killed before.

At first, Linda assumes Jenny is at best not in her right mind, and she blows Jenny off. After days of being confronted by Jenny in the hallways of the memory care unit, Linda finally takes a moment to listen.

The story meanders at points, Jenny starts and stops, but at the end, Jenny tells Linda her secret.

    The Review.

I haven’t read Joy Fielding since before I started tracking books I’ve read. I have no idea how many I read, but I can picture these little paperback copies. Oh, I miss those books.

JENNY COOPER HAS A SECRET was both fun and boring. These two can exist at the same time. I liked the characters, and I liked the story for the most part. However, the nature of several of the characters leads to a lot of rehashing and going over things multiple times. It got repetitive quickly.

I wish my experience this time were different.
