Strange Folk by Alli Dyer
Book Summary.
STRANGE FOLK
Allie Dyer
A debut and it felt like it, let’s talk about it!
STRANGE FOLK stars Lee. Lee is returning home with her children to set things right. She left her family home long ago and never intended to come back.
What she finds upon returning is a deep-rooted, generations-long connection to the healing land her family owns.
She finds that the magic she’s run her whole life from is the very magic that will set her free. And it will allow her to stop running from the long shadow that is her family‘s legacy.
The Review.
I was looking for an atmospheric and seasonal read that was transportive and magical. The storyline of a woman returning home to set things right after leaving so long ago felt like it would be restorative and cozy and the magical elements, I thought, would enhance my reading experience.
STRANGE FOLK was not exactly that. Creating a magic system was a bigger task than Dyer was up for in her debut novel. The magic system was clunkily put together and was attached to the story rather than incorporated within it.
Unfortunately, it was not what I was looking for and I would have a hard time recommending it or discussing it in circles with Deborah Harkness or Alice Hoffman.
Thanks to Netgalley and Atria Books for the advanced copy!
