Adèle appears to have the perfect life: She is a successful journalist in Paris who lives in a beautiful apartment with her surgeon husband and their young son. But underneath the surface, she is bored–and consumed by an insatiable need for sex.
Driven less by pleasure than compulsion, Adèle organizes her day around her extramarital affairs, arriving late to work and lying to her husband about where she’s been, until she becomes ensnared in a trap of her own making. Suspenseful, erotic, and electrically charged, Adèle is a captivating exploration of addiction, sexuality, and one woman’s quest to feel alive.
The Review
Adèle by Leila Slimani
Erotica.
That’s what this book is classified as. It’s not for young readers it’s not for the squeamish or for those who like their content clean, or in line with morals.
This book has none.
It’s feminist and shocking. The reversal of roles theme pushes boundaries and whenever I read it-it feels like a breath of fresh air.
I read it last in March 2019 and upon rereading it is a different experience.
When I first read it-it was Adele’s story. A story of a woman exploring her sexuality, however vilifying it is. It’s a story of the lack of vulnerability. A story of shame- acted out.
This time it’s much more about Adèle in context to those around her. A slight difference but a significant one. I came away with different questions and even more lingering thoughts.
And I think that is the beauty of this book. It’s not meant to be picked up and put down without an amount of contemplation.
From the first few pages, you’re asking yourself how you feel about certain situations and I think it challenges you. Which is inspiring as a long-time reader.
I’ll be reading more by Leila Slimani this month..follow along!
