Awake in the Floating City by Susanna Kwan

    Book Summary.

AWAKE IN THE FLOATING CITY Susanna Kwan Days of rain turned into months of rain, and the very structure on which the world was built began to crumble. The cities then turned into islands. Bo lives in such a city. She spends her days and nights alone, creating art and making plans for a not-so-bright future. She is set to leave with her cousin for a better situation, where she is with family, not alone. Days before leaving, she receives a request that a woman upstairs in the apartment building would like her help. Her name is Mia. Mia is in her last days, and the city around her is crumbling. She needs more help these days, and so she asks Bo a favor. Will Bo stay and care for her in her final days? Bo knows she should go, yet she decides to stay. This decision will change her life forever.

    The Review.

In this dystopian world, mourning your loved ones and celebrating their life in their passing is more difficult than ever. The rituals we know now have long been replaced with cold efficiency. AWAKE IN THE FLOATING CITY has a sentimental way of looking at life, at people. I appreciated being in that headspace while reading. Bo, as a character, is interesting because she kind of blossoms into herself over the course of the book. It felt more like a becoming than a traditional character arc. The writing is beautiful, and the story is layered, offering many levels of insight. I feel like an array of readers will enjoy this story and find a place within the pages as it discusses several themes and allows for multiple viewpoints from different angles. I really enjoyed this one. Out today! Thanks to Netgalley, Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor | Pantheon AWAKE IN THE FLOATING CITY…⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Synopsis.

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

    The Review.

We finally went to see SINNERS in theatres. I thought it was good, I thought it was great. Let me explain. The pacing is off with a long, slow beginning. Not much happens for a while. Paraphrased from a book I can’t remember the name of. The author describes much of the literature written by men to be similar to a man’s orgasm. With women writers writing similar to a woman’s orgasm. Please, if you remember the name of the book, leave it in the comments! Most writing, screenplays included, have a climax scene. Not much happens for a long time, then everything happens in five minutes, then you return to some kind of sentimental period with even less activity happening after that. I was already bored by the time the action started. And about half an hour in, my husband whispers to me… “From Dusk till Dawn” Which was extremely accurate. I appreciated the message. I appreciated the story and music, and moments of comic relief. In moments, it was great. Overall, it was good. I gave it four stars It was worth seeing on the big screen, and it would be fantastic in a packed theatre. SINNERS…⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay

    Book Summary.

PARENT’S WEEKEND Alex Finlay PARENTS WEEKEND was really good. I knew I would like it I did not know I would love it. It’s PARENTS WEEKEND, and all the parents have arrived. They’re all very different from each other, their only commonality being that their children attend school together. The parents arrive at dinner hopeful and excited. They order a few drinks and settle in, waiting for their children to arrive. Only as time ticks by do they realize none of the children are there. As a few of the parents start to get anxious, others convince them it isn’t a big deal. There is hazing going on, and they chalk it up to a prank. As night turns to dawn, the parents realize something far more nefarious is going on. They alert authorities, and before the sun rises, they assemble a search party, and they are on the hunt for the college students.

    The Review.

I would say if you’ve read Finally before with mixed ratings, this is the best opportunity to give it a try. I had more fun with PARENTS WEEKEND than I thought I would. I have always enjoyed aspects of Finlay’s writing, and this time, I thought everything came together more successfully than in the prior attempts. Are you planning to pick up PARENTS WEEKEND? Thanks to Netgalley, St Martin’s Press, and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copies! PARENTS WEEKEND…⭐⭐⭐⭐
