A claustrophobic psychological thriller about one woman’s nightmarish spiral while quarantined with her mother.
Grace isn’t exactly thrilled when her newly widowed mother, Jackie, asks to move in with her. They’ve never had a great relationship, and Grace likes her space—especially now that she’s stuck at home during a pandemic. Then again, she needs help with the mortgage after losing her job. And maybe it’ll be a chance for them to bond—or at least give each other a hand.
But living with Mother isn’t for everyone. Good intentions turn bad soon after Jackie moves in. Old wounds fester; new ones open. Grace starts having nightmares about her disabled twin sister, who died when they were kids. And Jackie discovers that Grace secretly catfishes people online—a hobby Jackie thinks is unforgivable.
When Jackie makes an earth-shattering accusation against her, Grace sees it as an act of revenge, and it sends her spiraling into a sleep-deprived madness. As the walls close in, the ghosts of Grace’s past collide with a new but familiar threat: Mom.

In MOTHERED we meet up with Grace during a pandemic. Grace’s mother Jackie has just asked Grace if she could stay with her for a duration during the pandemic. The end date or length of stay was not discussed. Rather than being happy about their cohabitation Grace is a little more than hesitant.
Grace and Jackie don’t have the best of relationships. In fact, you could say their relationship is strained. And when Jackie moves in with Grace it turns an already tense situation into something far worse, something horrific.
Zoje Stage and I get along most of the time, but I understand why her writing and her books may not appeal to a wide audience. She isn’t used to giving apologies or explanations for her characters’ behavior and I love that about her books.

In this case, the relationship being examined is again between a mother and her daughter. The pandemic as a backdrop offers an insight into the relationship and how stress and seclusion, fear, and anxiety, affect each of them. I found it very interesting to see how and in which ways they are affected.
I love that I can experience and appreciate this dynamic without having to live it.
Psychological horror is one of my favorite subgenres and if it’s one of yours, I suggest you pick this one up. An unusual Mother’s Day recommendation, but alas, here it is.
