HEADSHOT
Rita Bullwinkel
I’m so thankful that I read this. Don’t be surprised if it ends up on my end-of-the-year favorites.
There are so many women (including myself) whose will is not their own. Who have access to the gas pedal and the brake but not the steering wheel. Part of them feels autonomous, but they’ll have to check with their partner first to make sure. Make sure they’re following their dreams but in accordance with what everyone else says they’re allowed to reach for.
All of the women, the girls in this book show a side that we need to see more of. From the women we look up to, idealize, and try to be.
HEADSHOT is screaming out loud, and telling women, telling girls, they are strong and capable. And at first, before they belonged to anyone else, they belonged to themselves. Before they were ever taught to be docile, subservient, and a piece of property they were animals.
Savage and exploratory and wild, wild dreamers.
I immediately loved the voice. I especially loved the generous observations about what being a woman is about. It allowed for these women to narrate their own stories, perhaps in their own words, possibly for the first time. It did not encapsulate their identity; each woman was allowed to be who they are.
There is no ceiling here.
I listened to the audiobook and Cassandra Campbell did an amazing job with the material. No one could’ve done it better.
This is on the Booker Longlist and from what I have read so far, it is one of the standouts.
